What are BPH and its causes

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasiaor commonly known as BPH is a type of prostate enlargement that is not a precursor of cancer and thus is not a very serious condition in the sense of being a threat to the life of the person.
  • The most common cause for the enlargement of the prostate gland is the old age of the male. In old age, there are more chances that there may be any kind of infection or physical labor which may lead to the enlargement of the gland.
  • Another cause may be some kind of bacterial infection. Some bacterias enter the urinary system and go to the prostate gland and cause some kind of infection which leads to the rapid cell division in the prostate gland and the areas near them thus, resulting in the inflammation of the gland.

Symptoms of BPH

Several symptoms occur due to the enlargement of the prostate gland which is as follows:

  • The main symptom that is seen in males is that due to the enlargement there are some blockage problems in the outflow of the urine from the body. As the prostate gland grows in size it applies pressure on the urinary tract that lies beside it and blocks the path for the urine flow thus resulting in blockage.
  • Due to the blockage, there may be some problems that are associated with them. Due to the continuous block in the urinary tract, the person may feel pain in the lower abdomen and there may even be swelling in the urinary bladder as well.
  • This may lead to some urinary infection in the urinary bladder or another part of the excretory system and that may result in the appearance of blood along with the urine. The blood flow along with the urine indicates that the infection has spread and it needs treatment as soon as possible.

Treatment for BPH

Several treatment methods can be opted for treating BPH which is as follows:

  • One of the most important things is to maintain the diet of the person and avoid intake of such foods and drinks that may increase the infection.
  • Other than that the doctors prescribe some antibiotics that when taken get absorbed in the bloodstream and go to the prostate gland and acts on the cells on which the bacteria has caused the infection. The antibiotic kills the bacteria or stops the activity and thus the enlargement of the gland decreases.

Hence, it is advisable to anyone who observes any symptom of BPH should consult a doctor as soon as possible so that the treatment can be carried out as early as possible.
